CIUTADELLA
45 km from Mahón, Ciutadella is a staunch guardian of the island’s traditions. It is no longer officially the capital, a title lost in 1722, however it is still the most beautiful and noble city of the island.
Its urban centre is a small fortified city with narrow streets, which depart from Born Square (Plaça D'es Born), heart of this city. A special worthwhile mention goes to Ciutadella´s magical Port and Ses Voltes, a site to stroll peacefully and visit the local shops.
During the 23rd and 24th of June, Ciutadella is an outburst of joy as it celebrates one of the most spectacular festivities in the country in its Patron Saint's honour, Sant Joan. It is a festivity where the horse becomes the star of the film performing traditional equestrian games and following a ritual established in the Middle Age. It is an expression of happiness from a town which welcomes the visitor to its heart. |
